How this estimate works
- • Summit temperature equals trailhead temperature minus elevation gain in thousands of feet times the entered lapse rate.
- • For 50°F or colder with wind of at least 3 mph, the wind-adjusted value uses the NOAA wind-chill equation; otherwise it remains air temperature.
Before you begin
- • This is a planning estimate, not a forecast. Inversions, fronts, cloud, sun, precipitation, and terrain exposure can reverse or exceed the assumed lapse rate.
- • Wind chill describes exposed skin cooling, not a material temperature or a substitute for clothing, shelter, and local advisories.
