Deck Board Calculator

Estimate deck-board courses, board count, linear footage, fasteners, and waste for a rectangular deck.

A nominal 1×6 or 5/4×6 deck board is commonly about 5.5 inches wide.

Your estimate will appear here

Enter your project details and calculate for a practical planning estimate.

How this estimate works

  • Courses = covered width plus one gap, divided by actual board width plus gap, rounded up.
  • Stock pieces per course = board run divided by stock length, rounded up; total stock boards apply the selected waste allowance.
  • Fasteners assume two fasteners at every estimated board-to-joist crossing, plus 5%.

Before you begin

  • This rectangular surface estimate does not design framing or verify structural spans, loads, footings, guards, stairs, or permits.
  • Borders, diagonal layouts, openings, inlays, butt-joint staggering, unavailable stock lengths, and damaged boards can increase material.
  • Actual board dimensions and required gaps vary by material, moisture content, temperature, and manufacturer.
